Iran vs. USA in First-Ever Volleyball Matchup on U.S. Soil
This August, on volleyball courts across Southern California, history will be made.
Iran’s volleyball team has made their way to the United States for the first time ever to take on Team USA during the USA Volleyball Cup.
USA Volleyball Cup
The USA Volleyball Cup is an annual competition featuring the USA Men’s and Women’s National Teams against the best visiting teams in the world. And the games happen to take place in Southern California – with one of the games played right here in Anaheim at the Anaheim Convention Center.
Iran is the visiting volleyball team for 2014, and it is their first time ever playing in the USA. Iran is the #1 ranked team in Asia and just finished 4th in the World League Championships in Italy, even beating out Brazil, the #1 internationally ranked team. The USA is ranked #4 in the world and just took first place in the World League Championships in Italy. This friendly rivalry will make for some memorable games.
Iran beat the USA in five games just last year in the World Grand Champions Cup, escalating the competition for this year. Anaheim is home to the USA Volleyball team – but will Iran defeat the USA team in their backyard? Guess you’ll just have to come to find out!
The USA team will welcome the Iran team with dinners, side trips to California attractions such as Disneyland and an introduction to California beach volleyball led by US professional players.
As a former volleyball player on Team Dominate (on which we didn’t quite live up to our name), I can fully appreciate both the focused and passionate energy as well as the teamwork it takes to win a volleyball game. That being said, these four matches are all about the wonderful sport of volleyball and the players’ dedication to the game, so come enjoy this awesome sport with other enthusiastic Southern Californians.
Here is a following schedule of the four friendly games:
- August 9: USC at 7 p.m.
- August 13: Anaheim Convention Center at 7 p.m.
- August 15: SDSU at 7 p.m.
- August 16: UCLA at 6 p.m.
